2009 Rocca di Frassinello - Le Sughere di Frassinello (750ml)

Rocca di Frassinello:

Bought in 1999, this estate in Central Maremma is the result of a partnership between Paolo Panerai, owner of Castellare di Castellina in Chianti Classico, and Baron Eric de Rothschild of the world famous Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite. Rocca di Frassinello is a great international project, with an estimated investment of 20 million Euros. Maremma has a long established winegrowing tradition, especially in the North (Bolgheri and environs) and the South (Morellino di Scansano). Panerai’s choice instead was to aim right in between were soils had been found to have many of the same geological characteristics of the soils in Chianti and Montalcino, but with an average temperature which is 5 to 6 degrees higher and where grapes ripen 3 to 4 weeks before those of Chianti and Montalcino. This land blessed by God lies in the municipalities of Gavorrano and Ribolla and is part of a young DOC area called Montereggio di Massa Marittima. It took two years to bring five properties together to obtain a total of 500 hectares, of which 80ha are currently planted with vine (up to 125 ha as the project develops). The agreement between Castellare and Domaines Baron de Rothschild was to blend Castellare’s experience in the growing and vinification of the prince of Tuscan grape, Sangiovese, and Lafite’s experience with the classic French varietals, Cabernet (Franc and Sauvignon), Merlot, Petit Verdot, etc.

The result is a selection of 3 wines, all produced under the experienced supervision of Alessandro Cellai, winemaker of Castellare, and Christian Le Sommer, enologist for many of the Baron de Rothschild estates worldwide. All 3 wines are labeled Maremma Toscana IGT. To seal the international level of the Rocca di Frassinello estate, the cellar was designed by top Italian architect Renzo Piano, the man behind the center Pompidou in Paris and the renovated Morgan Library in New York. On the highest hill, opposite the town of Giuncarico in the municipality of Gavorrano, Piano conceived a cellar of overwhelming simplicity, with a revolutionary division of spaces and painstaking care of the vinification process. The new winery was officially unveiled on June 30th 2007. Vias Importer

91 points Wine Spectator:

This red is imbued with black currant, cherry and cedar aromas and flavors. The tannins are firm, but nicely entwined with the texture, and this finishes with a harmony of fruit and spice. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2014 through 2022. 2,250 cases imported. Top 100: 2011, Rank: 69 Oct 31, 2011

93 points Wine Advocate:

The 2009 Le Sughere di Frassinello is simply dazzling in this vintage. Expressive floral notes are woven throughout a fabric of vibrant dark fruit in this intense, supple red. Racy and expressive from start to finish, the wine impresses for its fabulous harmony and ripe, explosive finish. Le Sughere is best described as the estate’s second label. It is a 50% Sangioveto, 25% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 12 months in French oak, 50% new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021. #196Aug 2011
