2007 Il Borghetto Bilaccio (750ml)

Oenologist Tim Manning is able to coax an unusual level of finesse and silkiness that sets his wines apart from virtually all others being made in Chianti Classico today. Extended aging in French oak is felt in both the wines' texture and flavor profile. I sense there is significant margin for improvement with a slightly less obvious use of oak. But that is a matter of personal taste. There is no arguing these are exceptional wines by any measure. Readers will note that the estate has dropped the Chianti Classico designation from their labels. The wines are the same as before, but the Chianti Classico Consorzio does not allow for the use of Burgundy bottles so the estate was forced to choose between the formal appellation or its distinctive bottle. It would seem the Consorzio has far bigger and more important battles to fight, but that is a subject for another day. The Wine Advocate
92 points Wine Advocate:
:The 2007 Bilaccio (100% Sangiovese) is soft, supple and engaging in its silky, textured red berries, dried flowers and spices. This rich Sangiovese is best enjoyed over the next few years as it is already a touch forward. With air, the wine gains additional depth and creaminess on the palate along with quite a bit more overall focus. The oak may be a little overdone in 2007, but this is nevertheless an impressive showing from one of Tuscany’s most exciting emerging producers. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017. Antonio Galloni
