2010 Rippon Riesling Central Otago
Central Otago is situated on the 45º south latitude line, near the bottom of the South Island of New Zealand. It is on the Eastern side of Australasia's largest mountain range, The Southern Alps and is New Zealand's only viticultural region with a truly "continental" climate. It is also the world's most southern viticultural region. Rippon lies at 330 metres altitude, on the shores of Lake Wanaka.

Rippon's vines are planted in two main zones of differing soil types, both inherent to the way each wine tastes and feels. These two soil types are both borne of decomposing schist rock, but have arrived on the site by different means and at different times. A thin layer (5-15cms) of wind blown loess covers the property.

Granted custodianship over this very special piece of land, the family's principle goal is to create vins de terroir, wines that are an accurate reflection of their surroundings.

It is the micro-life in our soils which, in their ability to metabolise minerals into a form that vines can assimilate, are the link in between plants and the earth. This simple biology is the essential framework in producing a wine which is true to its soil and site. With this understanding comes an absolute respect for the land and life therein and it is for this reason that Rippon is run biodynamically. Rippon Winery
