2009 Thierry et Pascale Matrot Blagny La Piece sous le Bois

Joseph Matrot (1881-1963), the grandson of owners of a family wine estate in Puligny-Montrachet and Blagny, lived with his wife Marguerite Amoignon and their three children at Château d'Evelle. Marguerite also owned a beautiful wine estate in Meursault. In 1914 they took up residence in Marguerite's family home, which is today the seat of Domaine Matrot, and decided to develop and extend the estate.

Their son, Pierre Matrot, began working as a winegrower in 1937. He also bought vineyards, modernised the estate and, together with is wife Simone Bonin, had five children.

Having obtained a degree in winegrowing and oenology in Beaune, Thierry Matrot, Pierre's son born in 1955, continued with business studies in Mâcon Davayé. He joined the estate in 1976 and took over the vinification from 1983 on. Together with his father, he continued to strengthen the reputation of Domaine Matrot and its wines.

During the sixties, the Domaines Matrot did not escape the "chemical years" in winegrowing. It was not until Thierry began to work at the estate in 1976 that chemical fertilisers were abandoned and replaced by organic products.

It was at the same time that he and his father started to introduce a so-called "reasoned approach" to winegrowing ("lutte raisonnée" in French), which means adjusting the products and their dosage to the disease which needs to be treated.

It was as a result of a natural and progressive process that Thierry began cultivating all of the vineyards of Domaines Matrot organically in the year 2000.

The Blagny "La pièce sous le Bois" Premier Cru, just like its neighbour Meursault- Blagny Premier Cru Blanc, is strongly marked by its terroir. It is one of very few appellations in the Côte de Beaune where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grow happily side by side on the same parcel.During the first four years the wine offers a complex range of aromas with dark fruits such as blueberries and blackberries followed by spicy notes. After five to seven years of aging, aromas of undergrowth develop. An ideal accompaniment to pigeon, duck, winged game and meat in reduced sauces. Vineyard Brands Importer
