2009 Lemos & van Zeller Quinta Do Vale D. Maria Vinho Tinto

Although renown for the production of Port, the Douro valley also produces some excellent table wines, especially red wines. Quinta Vale Dona Maria Douro Reds are no exception, taking advantage of the excellent location and quality of its vineyards. The wines are deep in colour, concentrated, full of ripe soft tannins, with a very long fruity finish, with mature red fruits predominating. Bottled without any fining or filtration after 9 to 18 months ageing in French oak casks, Quinta Vale Dona Maria Douro Reds will improve with bottle age.

The Douro Reds are foot trodden in lagares for 12 to 24 hours and are then fermented in new temperature-controlled remontage vats. Some of these wines are also 100% foot trodden and fermented in lagares. This was the case of the Quinta do Vale D. Maria 1996 Douro Red, the first Douro Red Wine produced from the Quinta.

We could describe Douro Reds as relatively high in alcohol (13% to 14,5%) due to normally very ripe grapes (the Douro valley's climate is dry and hot), with lots of very ripe tannins, though not harsh, very fruity (mature black fruits, mainly), medium acidity (normal pH's of 3,5 to 3,6), with a big structure, a long finish and a long life span in bottle (10 to 15 years, at least). Food that better matches Douro Wines might be game, red meats, food with some spice (the high alcohol may give the impression of some kind of sweetness in the wine, though they are bone dry). Traditional dishes pairing with Douro Wines include several dry cod (bacalhau) recipes. Quinta Vale D. Maria

96 points Wine Advocate:
:The 2009 Tinto (Quinta Vale D. Maria) is a Douro field blend. This year, it has a sexiness to it that is captivating. Yet, that is certainly not all it has. The structure is impressive as is the balance, although it may need a few years to get where it’s going. The tannins are obvious, sometimes hard edged, but they are ultimately going to integrate. In its youth, the oak is also a touch obvious, but it is equally clear that will integrate, too. This seemed easy to categorize early on as sexy, ripe and tasty. There is tremendous potential here, mostly submerged at the moment. For every 15 minute interval it was open, it changed and got better. Put this in the cellar and come back in 5-6 years. Let it show you what it has. It will be a contender for one of the best Vale D. Marias. It will be a contender for wine of the vintage. It is tremendous. Drink 2014-2030. Mark Squires
