Owned by the Raynaud and Lebreton families, this 100% Merlot wine is produced from the oldest vines owned by La Croix de Gay. Many of the vines are close to 50 years of age. In select vintages, this Pomerol can be a decadently, styled Bordeaux wine. Dr. Alain Raynaud, the noted consultant had a major hand in producing the 1989 and 1990 vintages. Both remain the finest wines this estate has made yet. Raynaud pursued other ventures on his own, as the proprietor of Chateau Quinault L'Enclos, and as a consultant to numerous Bordeaux wine chateaux. Raynaud helped make the outstanding 2009 at La Fleur de Gay. The style of this Pomerol wine in the best vintages expresses pure silk and velvet. Layers of dark plums, chocolate, spice and opulent textures make this outstanding Bordeaux wine. Production hovers around seven thousand bottles per year.
As always, there is an elegance to the La Fleur de Gay, but the tell-tale flowery, raspberry jam, and blueberry pie notes jump from the glass along with hints of graphite and truffle. Deep, rich, full-bodied and textured, with sweet tannin and a stunning elegance and purity, this beauty that can be approached now or cellared for 20-25 years. Robert Parker #199Feb 2012
