2009 Graham's - Vintage Port Malvedos

2009 Graham's - Vintage Port Malvedos

The history of W & J Graham's spans three centuries and throughout that time this acclaimed Port producer has remained an independent family business.
The story of Graham's is the story of two families, both of Scottish origin - the Grahams and the Symingtons - whose commitment to the making of memorable wines has earned for Graham's a reputation as a leader in the production of outstanding Vintage Ports.

W & J Graham's was founded in Oporto, Portugal's second city, in 1820 by the two brothers William and John Graham. The Graham family already had extensive business interests not just in their native Scotland but also in India. The success of their affairs led to them being described by a contemporary historian, as being "among the merchant princes of Great Britain." The brothers formed the partnership of W & J Graham & Co. with the aim of specialising in the production of the finest Port wines. They channeled their considerable resources and energy towards the pursuit of this goal.

Currently five members of the Symington family (from the 13th generation in the Port trade) are actively involved in Graham's day to day management, with the dedication and long-term commitment that are unique to a family-run business. From the vineyards through the winemaking, ageing and blending, a member of the family is directly responsible for every bottle of Graham's Port produced. The family's commitment to its wines is stronger than ever after 350 years, an unparalleled tradition in the Port trade.

Acquired in 1890, Malvedos is the company's flagship Quinta and one of the finest properties in the Alto Douro. It is ideally situated on the north bank and has a south-facing aspect. The Quinta's name, which means "bad ways," comes from the rapids which existed below the property before dams were built on the Douro River. Although the journey to the estate used to be treacherous, early pioneers were just as awed by its natural beauty and magnificent views as those visiting today.

The Symington family is committed to investing in the vineyards and in production methods to ensure that only the finest wines are produced. Malvedos underwent a major replanting program in the 1980's; currently half of its 360 acres are under vine. With over 200,000 vines, the quinta yields some 350 pipes (21,400 cases) of Port annually.

The family's revolutionary robotic lagar, an innovation that simulates traditional foot-treading with temperature-controlled silicon toes, was first used for the Graham's 2000 Vintage Port -- a Wine Spectator "Top 100" wine rated 98 points in 2003. W. & J. Graham's
