Rafael and José Guilisasti were visionaries in the late 1990s when they saw that the market was beginning to change and that consumers worldwide were becoming more aware of the products they were consuming, not only for health reasons, but also with respect to their social and environmental impacts.
They therefore asked winemaking consultant Alvaro Espinoza to join them in the process of converting a conventional Chilean winery into one that was 100% organic and biodynamic with the firm objective of creating wines of the highest quality with great respect for nature.
All of the work done at Emiliana focuses on a single concept: Excellence. This is based on the harmony between the maximum quality of its wines and the respect for the environment and its people.
Colchagua is in Chile's 6th Region, Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins and is part of the larger Rapel Valley. The four seasons of the year are clearly differentiated, and the grapes ripen easily and uniformly. A unique combination of marine breezes and Andean winds makes this the perfect place to grow red varietals such as Merlot, Syrah, and especially Carmenere. It has an average temperature of 22ºC (72ºF) and low annual precipitation. The soils are alluvial in origin, fairly deep, and are uniformly silty-loam in texture.
Coyam
is the word for "Oak Forest" used by the original inhabitants of Chile: The Mapuches. Ancient oaks surround the vineyard where Coyam is born.
Tasting Notes:
Coyam is an intense violet plum red in color with a nose that expresses aromas of ripe red fruits, plums, berries, and black fruits that meld elegantly with notes of spice, earth, and a touch of sweet vanilla. Well balanced and big bodied on the palate, with good structure and soft, round tannins. An intense, complex wine full of character.
