Chryseia, while a relatively new project, has a long tradition of great winemaking. The Symington family has four generations of experience in the Port trade and their partner, Bruno Prats, is the former winemaker for France's renowned Château Cos d'Estournel.
Prats + Symington's Chryseia Douro DOCThe Prats + Symington partnership began in 1998 with the goal of making a top wine from Portugal's Douro Valley. In 1999, they produced some experimental lots of wine and in 2000, the first vintage of Chryseia. The second wine of the estate, Post Scriptum, was first made in 2002 when they decided not to make Chryseia due to more difficult growing conditions. Going forward,
Post Scriptum
will be released each year and Chryseia produced in exceptional years when harvest conditions permit. In 2009, Prats + Symington purchased the historic Quinta de Roriz estate adding Prazo de Roriz to their collection of Douro DOC wines.
Chryseia has been one of the pioneers of the now widely-recognised resurgence of non-fortified DOURO DOC wines. However, this wine, whose name means "golden" in ancient Greek - as does the name of the river in Portuguese - has remained true to its own style. Elegance and balance predominate and it has depth without heaviness, and body without sharpness. Chryseia symbolises the union of a noble Portuguese tradition and an equally rich Bordeaux tradition in the creation of a new and modern style of wine. Chryseia was first launched with the 2000 vintage and has already demonstrated the incredible potential of combining winemaking expertise from two of the world's most acclaimed wine regions, Portugal's Douro Valley and France's Bordeaux.
