2008 Vignavecchia Chianti Classico Riserva Odoardo Beccari

After spending years wandering through the forests of Borneo, Odoardo Beccari, a Florentine explorer, zoologist, botanist and ethnologist, retired to Radda in 1876 and devoted himself to his family's land. He had, over the years, partecipated in the purchase of the Bay of Assab, visiting the Cheren region and traveled through some of the wildest parts of the island of Celebes, exploring New Guinea and the Moluccas. He returned to Italy with some rare zoological and botanical specimens.

Beccari's innate passion for collecting never left him and after transforming himself from an ethnologist into an enologist, he began collecting the best vintage wines produced on his estate. To this day, the estate's private wine collection includes bottles dating from 1876 to 1931.

Vignavecchia estate is located at about one kilometre from Radda in Chianti. The cellar, completely surrounded by the vineyards, is an old country farmhouse which was completely restored and enlarged in 1997.

In this modern cellar take place the complete vinification process and bottling of the whole production; one part of the building is destined to the ageing of the wine in oak barrels.

The vineyards consist of 21 plots mainly Sangiovese and Colorino with a minor percentage of Canaiolo and Merlot. Amongst the old and new vine-stocks there are Malvasia (for the production of Vinsanto) and 0,80 ha Chardonnay planted in 1994.

The soil is rich of clay, silstone and calcareous material. Usually these soils have a low fertility thus reducing naturally an overproduction of the grapes. Vignavecchia Winery

92 points Wine Advocate:
:The 2008 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigneto Odoardo Beccari bursts from the glass with an exciting melange of wild black cherries, smoke, licorice and scorched earth. This shows gorgeous mid-palate sweetness married to expressive aromatics in a generous style that is quite unusual in 2008. The mineral-laced finish is quite striking. The Odoardo Beccari is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Caniaolo. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028. Antonio Galloni
