2008 Di Majo Norante Ramitello Biferno Rosso Molise

Molise shares it topography, culture, and cuisine with Abruzzo, its neighbor to the north. In fact, these two regions were actually one (known collectively as Abruzzese) until Molise gained administrative independence in 1963. As is true for so many regions of Italy, the Etruscans were the first to introduce viticulture to this area during the 6th and 7th centuries BCE. Early cultivation of Apianae grapes won praise from Greek and Roman scholars, but as a whole, the province has remained in relative obscurity. That Molise continues to be overlooked is unfortunate, but it may just be one of the last frontiers of the Italian winescape.

Molise does have its own viticultural twist, however. Montepulciano and Sangiovese are grown, as in Abruzzo, but in Molise you will also find such varieties as Barbera, Bombino Rosso and Aglianico, an indication that we characterize wine from Molise as more southern in style. White varieties are also of southern flavor, including Bombino Bianco, Malvasia Bianca, Falanghina and Fiano. Moreover, whereas Abruzzo has become viticulturally modernized, Molise still harbors evidence of ancient Etruscan viticulture, such as vines being trained to Mulberry or Maple trees.

The Di Majo Norante winery is located on the estate of the Marquis Norante of Santa Cristina in the region of Molise, along on the Adriatic Sea between Puglia and Abruzzo. The cultivation of vines in this area dates back to 500 BC when the region was inhabited by the Sanniti and the Osci, two pre-Roman civilizations. The estate has been dedicated to growing vines since the 1800s. In the 1960s a modern cantina was constructed and vines were replanted in the Ramitello area. Optimal exposure, constant breezes during the summer, excellent soil composition and a slope toward the Sciabolone and Madonna Grande valleys, combine to create a particularly favorable environment for the production of wine. Alessio Di Majo has hired renowned enologist Riccardo Cotarella as a consultant in order to ensure consistent, high quality production for all the estate's wines. In addition to producing quality wine at an outstanding value, the Di Majo family is dedicated to practicing environmentally sound agriculture. Winebow Importer

92 points Wine Advocate:
:The 2008 Ramitello, a blend of 80% Montepulciano and 20% Aglianico, boasts fabulous clarity and freshness, with layers of vibrant dark cherries and plums that meld together with notable grace. Smoke, tar, menthol and licorice develop in the glass, giving the wine even more dimensions of expression. This is a terrific effort from Di Majo Norante. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013.
