For more than 80 years, the Ceretto family has been making wine in Piedmont's Langhe region of Italy and has set the benchmark for quality among Barolo and Barbaresco producers. The family is most well known for producing coveted single-vineyard Nebbiolo wines and introducing high-quality Arneis and Moscato. Today, the Ceretto name is synonymous with estate-grown, carefully produced wines, each expressing purity and elegance.The Ceretto family is one of the largest landholders in Piedmont with more than 740 hectares (300 acres) of estate vineyards located primarily in Langhe, including in the prized Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) zones of Barolo and Barbaresco, as well as the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) zones of Langhe and Roero. The Cerettos were the first in Piedmont to introduce stainless-steel tanks for fermenting red wines. They also instituted managing the canopy and fruit load on the vines to yield ripe fruit with ripe tannins. During fermentation, the Cerettos began pumping over the wine to avoid extracting green or astringent tannins. The culmination of the Ceretto family's efforts has changed Barolo, eliminating the need for it to age for decades in bottle before it was ready to drink.The Ceretto family owns four winery estates in Langhe, each devoted to specific wines and each named for its geographic location. The advantages of this include preservation of fruit freshness by limiting the distance grapes are transported and outfitting each winery with equipment specific to the wines produced. The estates are Bricco Rocche in the village of Castiglione Falletto, where single-vineyard Barolo wines are produced; Bricco Asili in the village of Barbaresco, home to the single-vineyard Barbaresco wines; Monsordo Bernardina in Alba, dedicated to the production of wines from their estate vineyards and from other vineyards in Langhe and Roero. The fourth estate is I Vignaioli Santo Stefano, located in the village of Santo Stefano Belbo.After producing individual varietal wines from the vineyards at Monsordo Bernardina, in 1997 the Cerettos decided to create a blend from the world's leading red-grape varieties.
