2008 Beaulieu Vineyard - Tapestry Reserve Napa Valley
In Beaulieu Vineyard's Reserve 'Tapestry', winemaker Jeffrey Stambor weaves five classic Bordeaux varietals, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, into an elegant, beautifully balanced wine. Pre-fermentation maceration, gentle punch-downs and in-barrel malolactic fermentation helped build the layers and nuances of this multidimensional wine. First produced in 1990 as a complement to the Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Tapestry has aromatic notes of licorice/anise layered over hints of lead pencil shavings and earthy forest floor aromas. On the palate, Tapestry weaves rich cassis, dark cherry, blackberry, and dark currant fruit flavors, accented by cocoa and toast. This wine astutely balances intensity and approachability. While drinkable now, the patient collector will be rewarded with even more complexity and nuance in 10-15 years time. This is an outstanding wine at a very affordable price.
