Hubert de Bouard, owner of St. Emilion's famous Chateau Angelus, is the hands-on consultant here. The vineyard was replanted in the mid-90s with 66% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc. This vintage has over 80% Merlot. The grapes were harvested by hand and aged in new and used French oak barrels and also in tank. Clos Chaumont Premier Cote de Bordeaux 2005 exemplifies the high quality of this vintage in Bordeaux's satellite appellations. It is firm and flavorful, with good depth and potential for development.
What a sexy, seductive, dense ruby/purple-colored effort. Made from 2/3 Merlot and the rest the two Cabernets, the 2005 Clos Chaumont exhibits loads of chocolate-covered black cherries intermixed with notions of tobacco leaves and spice. Medium to full-bodied with velvety tannins, lush fruit, and a layered mouthfeel with no hard edges, it should be drunk over the next 4-5 years.
