2001 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Campolongo di Torbe

The history of Masi is the history of its vineyards around Verona, in the Venetian region. The name derives from "Vaio dei Masi", the little valley acquired in the late 18th century by the Boscaini family, which retains ownership to this day. The company has grown step by step through successive, and very careful, purchases in the best viticultural areas of the Venetian region. Masi is also involved in the management of the most historic estate in Valpolicella, which has belonged to the noble Serego Alighieri family, descendants of the poet Dante, since 1353. Winegrowing and producing have recently been developed in Tuscany (Poderi del Bello Ovile), in Argentina, with 'Vigneti La Arboleda' which produce the Masi label Tupungato, and in the Trentino, where collaboration has been initiated with the historic winery of the Conti Bossi Fedrigotti of Rovereto.

Masi production strategy aims to emphasize the personality of each single product, while maintaining a recognisable Venetian style. In 1958, Masi was in the forefront of the work to identify the historic "cru" vineyard sites for Amarone. In 1964, Campofiorin was the first in a new category of wines, reinventing the technique of double fermentation and continually updating it. Masi has also updated the style of Amarone, using new appassimento and vinification technologies. Masi wines are modern, attractive, well-balanced and easily identifiable; characteristics which have earned Masi recognition for
having "revolutionized the art of wine-making in the Venetian region". Hugh Johnson defines Masi as "a touchstone for Veronese wines".

Campolongo di Torbe from Masi is the epitome of elegance, and comes from an historic vineyard whose quality has been renowned since the XIIº century. Its principal characteristics are its rich, almondy aroma and its great depth and balance. It is delicious drunk on its own at the end of a meal, or with red meats, game, or strongly-flavoured dishes in general. Its production is very limited. Masi Winery

91 points Wine Advocate:
:The 2001 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Superiore Campolongo di Torbe reveals notable complexity in its suggestions of leather, spices, plums, prunes and roasted coffee beans. As one might rightfully expect of a wine of this age, the fruit is no longer vibrant, yet the wine possesses terrific length and finessed tannins. This could almost be mistaken for a mature Burgundy. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2019. Antonio Galloni
