Homère Clément founded Rhum Clément in 1887 when he purchased the Domaine de l'Acajou sugar plantation in Martinique. He had the novel idea to turn the plantation into a rum distillery that distilled from the juice of freshly cut sugarcane instead of the molasses by-product of sugar, an idea that he took from the brandy producers in southern France. And with this idea, Rhum Agricole was born, and Rhum Clément remains the leading producer of Appelation d'Origine Contrôlée (A.O.C.) rhum agricole.
