Campari is a bitter aperitif (48 proof), red in color and created through the infusion of herbs and fruit in alcohol and water. Created by the Campari Group of Italy, Campari's unique recipe has never changed since its beginning over 150 years ago, and the recipe is such a closely guarded secret that very few know the exact number of ingredients, said to be somewhere between 20 to 60. Campari is often used in cocktails, most notably the Campari and Soda prepared by pouring Campari over ice and adding club soda and an orange slice. It is also the base of an Americano Cocktail. The Americano was first served in Gaspare Campari's bar in the 1860's, and was originally called the "Milano-Torino." It became popular in Italy among American tourists during Prohibition, and was renamed the "Americano."

Americano Cocktail Recipe

1 oz. Campari
1 oz Red Vermouth
Splash of club soda

Pour Campari and Vermouth over ice in a highball or old fashion glass. Add a splash of club soda and garnish with an orange twist.
